Vegetable protein sources usually come as meal or cake, the by-product of oilseed crops. The main oilseed crops include soybean, rapeseed/canola, sunflower, palm kernel, copra, linseed peanut and sesame seed. After the oil is extracted, the remaining residue is used as feed ingredient. Oilseed meals make up 20-30% of a poultry diet. Inclusion levels do vary among formulations for different species and for the same species in different regions.
Soybean meal is a major source of protein used by pig and the poultry feed production. It has a high level of protein content and energy and lower in crude fibre compared with most other oilseed meal. Soybean meal has an execellent profile of essential amino acids and are highly digestible. Containing lysine, methionine, cystine and threonin that are highly digestible.

Rapeseed Meal, also called Canola Meal in North America, Australia and some other countries, is a protein rich ingredient that can be used for a variety of feed application. The meal are derived from solvent extraction of the press cake from the crushing of oil seed.Typical meal contains a little less than 40% protein, has a relatively high content of crude fiber compared with other old seed meals. It is especially good in supplement feed for dairy cattle to support high levels of milk production due to its lower protein degradation and a favourable amino acid profile.

Sesame seed meal is a by-product of oil extraction. Compared to soybean meal, sesame seed meal is low in lysine, isoleucine, leucine, and valine. It is, however, a good source of the sulfur-containing amino acids, including methionine. Sesame seed meal can constitute up to 10% to12% of an organic broiler diet, with no adverse effects on growth performance.
